Chapter Six

We wrote for over an hour that evening, Scott still dictating and me still having my out-of-body experience as I let my hand take over and my mind wander. I saw us from an outsider’s perspective and from that vantage point, Scott appeared to be a kind of mad linguist and me his desperate assistant. Hunched over the growing pile of papers, I was clearly working for his approval, praying my handwriting and pacing would be enough. He never looked over at me, he just watched the air around him as he pulled down the words and fed them to me one by one.

“Can you read that last part back to me?”

I cleared my throat and began. “The dress was beginning to take shape and every day, Mary found herself walking quickly to the shop so that she could marvel at Harold’s handiwork. She had never cared much for clothing or fashion, but the silvery blue of the fabric, the delicate lines of the seams enchanted her and she had to know how it would all end up, to see the final work of art she was sure this gown would be.”

While I thought the passage was fine, Scott screwed his face up as if he’d just bitten into a lemon. “It’s too much,” he said. “I’m getting too melodramatic.” He looked at me with interest and cocked his head. “Do you think? Or, am I just overreacting?”

I looked down at the paper and read it again. “Hmm. It is a bit sweet, but I think that Mary is as well. I mean, she’s never had much to be excited about in her life, and that makes her a bit dull but it also makes her naive and innocent. This little shop is, in a way, a chance for her to explore a new kind of world and that’s a real thrill for her.” I looked up and smiled. “He gives it to her, doesn’t he?”

Scott lifted his eyebrows in surprise and approval, then nodded. “Of course. How did you guess?”

“Because,” I said, stacking the papers together, “he’s in love with her. He won’t let it go to anyone else. Do they end up together?”

I waited as Scott fell back against his wheelchair and gave me an amused smile. “Well, I guess. I mean, it is a romance. But, I have to test her first. See if she has any mettle.”

“So that we’ll know she can take him on. That she deserves true love.”

Another look of happy confirmation came from Scott. “Exactly. You know, Jake, maybe you should write someone one day. You have a good understanding of how a good plot comes together.”

I cleared my throat and reached for his hand. “What if,” I ventured, already terrified, “what if I wrote about you?”

His mouth fell open into a perfect ‘O’ as he regarded me. “Why would you want to do that?”

“Because,” I said, reaching for his hand, “your story about your son, your career, the incident that put you in this chair…it’s something.
